Established in 1869, and named after Robert Patton's home town in Perthshire, Scotland, Methven Mt Hutt Village is a typical New Zealand country town. Situated one hour from Christchurch International Airport via State Highway 72, (the Inland Scenic Route) it is nestled at the foot of spectacular Southern Alps. Methven is surrounded by the chequerboard fields of the Plains and dwarfed by a magnificent backdrop of mountains. This once quiet, rural village is now a Mecca for sports lovers from within New Zealand and overseas.

Each year thousands of visitors from around the world base themselves at Methven Mt Hutt Village, at the heart of seven ski areas and over 1000 square kilometres of the best Heli-skiing terrain in New Zealand. A stone's throw from the village, Mount Hutt Ski Area receives some of the deepest, lightest, driest powder in Australasia. Also voted 2015 best ski field in the World

The wide open terrain is great for first-time skiers and families, but extreme skiers and snowboarders will get their adrenaline pumping with Black Diamond and Double Black Diamond runs on the South Face. Mount Hutt Ski Area is renowned for having the longest season (mid-June to mid-October), the longest ski-season of any resort in New Zealand, with the best snow in the Southern Hemisphere! Where else could you ski for 4 months of the year?

The village is also a popular summer resort for overseas visitors and New Zealanders alike, who come to enjoy the beauty of the region's mountains and back-country lakes. Methven is at the heart of a whole host of activities and experiences including:

  • Fabulous sub-alpine and scenic walkways,

  • Go horse trekking across some of the country's most beautiful landscapes or try your hand at tandem horse harness racing in a unique twin sulky behind a champion racer at full speed,.
  • Fish for quinnat salmon or brown trout in the High Country lakes and unique "braided" rivers.

Of course, not all the excitement goes on in the Great Outdoors! Methven has a winter persona as a fun-loving centre of après-ski, and the balmy summer climate lends itself perfectly to alfresco evenings out. With over twenty eating establishments and bars, visitors to Methven Mt Hutt Village can enjoy a wide variety of meals, from the classic kiwi takeaway or New Zealand country pub meal to delicious first-class fare.
